As you may have read yesterday, M.I.A.’s headlining performance at the otherwise stellar HARD Fest on Governor’s Island was cut short by lightning after a few songs. Some have said this was a blessing in disguise—that her set was headed toward disaster, with bad sound and overall sloppiness wreaking havoc. She’s promised to make up for it, though: via Twitter yesterday, M.I.A. promised a free NYC show to anyone still holding their HARD Fest tickets. This is certainly a nice gesture, and it will be great if it happens, but given her recent past, one must wonder if this is just Maya being Maya.

M.I.A. takes to a Los Angeles rooftop to speak about the writing process for her new album /\/\/\Y/\, her pick for the World Cup, and gets emotional when discussing an issue close to home, the Arizona immigration law, in an interview with Rockerrazzi. The “XXXO” singer, who will perform at the HARD Festival in L.A. and New York, even extends an invitation to Mexican immigrants who want to see her show.
“I wish HARD Fest was free just for Mexican people,” she said. “Everyone who’s crossed the Arizona borders are welcome at my show. I’ll make you a freakin’ passport. I got Nigerians on the phone.”
“M.I.A. has taken shots at Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber, and now the outspoken singer is serving up a different kind of shot—“Teqkilla.” Take a rousing beat, mix it with a catchy chorus, and serve on the rocks. M.I.A. will perform July 13 on “The Late Show with David Letterman,” the same day her album /\/\/\Y/\ arrives in stores. Get drunk on her latest concoction below.”
